How to Choose Best Dishwasher

Best Drawer Dishwasher – KitchenAid Architect Series II KUDH03DTSS Fully Integrated Double Drawer Dishwasher

I’ve used KitchenAid appliances for decades and rarely does it disappoint me. I had this in mind when I saw this KitchenAid Architect Series II KUDH03DTSS Double Drawer Dishwasher online. I was looking for a new dishwasher to fit my new home (yes, I’m moving again!) and although I had good experience with my Bosch, shopping urge nagged at me to look around for something new.

KitchenAid Architect Series II KUDH03DTSS Fully Integrated Double Drawer Dishwasher

Well then I didn’t find many reviews online for this dishwasher so I upped and went to the stores to see it myself. From lots of earlier research, I knew that drawer dishwashers are pretty useful but it was a new design so I hadn’t got a chance to try it.

Wash Half Load, Or Both, with Different Cycles
When I first saw the KitchenAid Architect Series II KUDH03DTSS Double Drawer Dishwasher in the flesh (or stainless steel, rather), I was half sold. The thing is beautiful! The elegant design of double drawers will definitely blend in with my new kitchen, and I’ll finally have the option to wash less or more as I liked.

If you read my guide post on Types of Dishwasher, you’ll know that with drawer dishwashers, you can wash the top load and bottom load simultaneously with different cycles. With this one I can wash my china plates in the top drawer and my pots in the bottom one. Isn’t that awesome? In fact, it has five cycles, “rinse only”, “quick clean”, “gentle”, “normal”, and “heavy”.

Plenty of Good Features

There’s the hard food disposer. No more cleaning filters because this will scour the dishes clean of any leftovers and grind it down. This and the high temperature scrub feature will definitely get dishes clean without soaking.

And there’s a start delay, great for busy days when I can’t wait around to start the dishwasher. Plus it’s got an Energy Star rating, saving me costs. I didn’t mind that it was slightly louder than my Bosch, and loading from the top is alright too.

I bought the KitchenAid Architect Series II KUDH03DTSS Double Drawer Dishwasher, of course. I hope it’s going to last me many years.

To be honest, I don’t trust countertop dishwashers. They seem to have more angry/disappointed owners than most standard size dishwashers do. But if you still need the smallest dishwasher available, you need a countertop dishwasher and I suggest the Edgestar Portable Countertop Dishwasher with digital controls.

EdgeStar Portable Countertop Dishwasher

I recently helped my niece look for a countertop and we debated a long time whether to get this one or the Danby countertop, because I had a Danby portable dishwasher which worked well. In the end we decided to give this a try because it had a lot more reviews (both good and bad ones) compared to Danby.

Installation is Fairly Simple with a Few Tricks
Always measure your countertop space first before you buy a countertop dishwasher because it really isn’t as small as it looks in the photos! The Edgestar Portable Countertop Dishwasher is hooked up next to the sink just like any other dishwashers.

When it comes out of the box, you’ll find that some or all of the connections are already attached, but when you hook it up, you MUST tighten all the connections. This piece of advice is given by not one but several users, and I’ve read quite a few bad reviews which complained of leakage. I assume that there is a close connection (no pun intended!) between the two but I can’t be sure.

Good Make, Energy Star Rating

It has a stainless steel tub and spray arm, and the dish rack holds 4 place settings. There were people complaining that the rack won’t hold their dishes, so my niece and I brought her dishes to the store and tried it out. They fitted. Pots and pans are more difficult but you can still fit one or two of those if you take out everything else.

My niece is all excited over the energy star rating because saving costs is what a college student would be mostly concerned about. She’s really happy with the purchase; now she can cook everyday and not wash a single dish by hand!

I recommend this Edgestar Portable Countertop Dishwasher to anyone who:

  1. cannot fit a built-in, standard size portable or even a slimline dishwasher in their kitchen;
  2. has countertop space next to the sink to place this (measure first!); and
  3. doesn’t have too many dishes to wash (only 4 place settings, unless you want to do two cycles).

If your work is taking up so much of your time that you don’t have any left to run the dishwasher except before bedtime or before going to work, just like me when I was in a sales job, and sometimes those mornings seemed so short that you just can’t spare another minute waiting for that last person to finish with their breakfast dish, having a noisy dishwasher running at night isn’t going to help with matters.

Before I successfully trained my kids to load the dishwasher properly, I knew I had to get a quiet one to run at night. And quietness was what led me to get this Bosch SHX98M09UC Integra 800 Series Dishwasher.

Bosch : SHX98M09UC Integra 800 Series 24in Undercounter Dishwasher

Shh…
Among all the dishwashers I’ve seen for myself in shops and which reviews I read online, the Bosch SHX98M09UC SHX98M09UC Integra 800 Series Dishwasher is the quietest within my budget range. In fact, all it produces is white noise hum when it is running. There’s a red light to show that it IS in fact, running, don’t worry, and a display to show you what cycle it’s doing and how much time left.

“The main reason why we decided on this washer is the noise rating: the quietest we could find in our price range. And on this point, we were just blown away! The first time we turned it on, we had trouble believing it was running!” – F. Perrin, reviewer at Amazon

It’s got delay start too. If you’ve read my dishwasher features guide post, you’ll know why this is important to me. I don’t have to wait for everyone to finish eating before I rush off to work; I just press delay start and ask whoever is still at the table to put the dishes in later.

Anyway I digressed. The dishwasher takes a long time to finish its cycle but I didn’t care because I run it before I go to bed. I can’t even hear the low hum once I’m out of the kitchen, that’s how quiet it is.

Energy Saving
Bosch SHX98M09UC Integra 800 Series Dishwasher is stainless steel inside out, and is a standard size built-in under-the-counter dishwasher. It cleans my dishes effectively – even the plates with dried caked food turn out shiny – and saves energy because it doesn’t use heat for drying unless you tell it to. I usually add a drying agent so that there is no water left in bottom of glasses.

Is That All?
If I must state one bad point about it, it could be that the stainless steel exterior is easily stained with fingerprints. I noticed that other reviewers also complained about this, but if you don’t mind a less than perfect exterior or have a good solution to this, go ahead and buy the Bosch SHX98M09UC Integra 800 Series Dishwasher. Amazon is selling this for a whopping 25% discount, so grab it now.

I owned this Danby DDW1805W Portable Dishwasher a few years back when I just moved into my rented apartment. The place didn’t have a dishwasher so I got online immediately to search for a good one. There wasn’t space under the counter for a built-in dishwasher, and the place was rented anyway so I decided that a portable one would do.

Danby DDW1805W Portable Dishwasher

Sturdy Build and Quiet
This Danby DDW1805W Portable Dishwasher is an 18-inch slimline, which is great because my kitchen wasn’t all that big and was full of my other kitchen appliances; I can even use the top as an extra countertop!

The interior is stainless steel, which is great for sanitizing because it endures higher heat than plastic. The whole thing is sturdy and well-built so I’ve never experienced any leaks during its use. The dishes might seem too close together when loaded but the top spray and two moving arms work well getting the dishes clean.

“After unpacking and inspection, I concluded that it was built with the same specs as the top of the line Kenmore (which I used to sell).” – J.Reid, reviewer at Amazon.com

The stainless steel and build of the dishwasher must have contributed to its soundlessness too. The Danby DDW1805W Portable Dishwasher is much quieter than I had expected it to be. In fact, it’s almost as quiet as the Bosch I own now. Bosch 800 Series still win, of course, being the built-in that it is.

What’s the Catch?

A couple of reviewers have mentioned that when connecting the hose to the faucet you have to be careful, because the ball bearings might come out if you push the connector too far down. Luckily for me I read through everything I could before buying this so I took the advice to heart and it never happened to me. Phew.

Well, the control panel is made of plastic parts, but they aren’t flimsy and certainly you’d have to keep children away from them. Hose is a bit short so I had to hook it up right next to the sink, but since my kitchen was small so this wasn’t a problem for me either.

I’d say if you got a small to medium size kitchen, can’t do with a built-in, or needed the portability, get this Danby DDW1805W Portable Dishwasher. It’s definitely value for money. If you’re looking for a built-in or fully integrated dishwasher below $1000, I would recommend this Whirlpool GU2475XTVY Fully Integrated Dishwasher as a first choice. For one thing, it has positive reviews and so far I haven’t seen anyone give it less than four stars rating. It’s not a high end dishwasher nor is it top of the line, but for slightly more than $600 this is absolutely a value buy!

Whirlpool GU2475XTVY 24in Fully Integrated Dishwasher

The Build
I bought this for my mother when her ancient dishwasher finally broke down. The Whirlpool GU2475XTVY Fully Integrated Dishwasher is a standard size (24-inch) dishwasher, stainless steel on the outside and plastic on the inside. The controls are hidden in the interior door panel so you only see a sleek stainless steel surface that looks great.

There are 36 jets and no tower, good enough to get all the dishes clean in one cycle without soaking or scrubbing first. There are as many as 6 cycles to choose from, but I don’t think anyone will really use all of them. My mum says her pots and pans get cleaned very well, and I have to agree. I have never seen my mum’s pots so clean. It’s the pot-scrubber feature with this dishwasher. Many others complimented it as well, so I guess if you have a lot of pots and pans to clean, this is really cool.

Not Super Quiet, but Can Do
Since this Whirlpool GU2475XTVY Fully Integrated Dishwasher has a plastic tub it wasn’t as quiet as other high end built-ins, like my Bosch, which is perfectly quiet. It’s quiet enough if you don’t normally spend your time watching tv next to your kitchen, or if your kitchen is far enough from your living space.

For a fully integrated dishwasher below $1000, I think the Whirlpool GU2475XTVY performs really well. Grade it? Exceeds my expectations. Unless you want to spend more and get a whisper quiet high end model, this is the best value choice. Best Budget Dishwasher – Whirlpool DU850SWPQ Dishwasher

Dishwashers can be a luxury for some, but there are still options for those with a tight budget. This full size Whirlpool DU850SWPQ Dishwasher costs only half the price of the usual mid-end full size dishwashers, but does the job.

Whirlpool DU850SWPQ Dishwasher

Basic Dishwasher at A Very Affordable Price
It will wash your dishes, simple as that, no frills. It does not have hard food disposer, sensors, or a lot of sophisticated programs. The Whirlpool DU850SWPQ Dishwasher is very simple to use, with 4 automatic cycles and knob control.

There is only one spray arm but it does get the plates clean if you use the right detergent. What it does have is the Pots and Pans cycle, and being a full size dishwasher it can handle several of those at a time. It has a high temperature boost you can use to sanitize the dishes, and delay start option.

Great for Big Families
The Whirlpool DU850SWPQ Dishwasher washes 10 place settings in one full load, which is great value for money! The price is about the same as a countertop dishwasher which can wash 4 to 6 place settings per load. Plus it has Energy Star qualified rating to save energy costs.

Not Quiet Though
Of course, you get what you pay for. Don’t expect this dishwasher to be whisper quiet like the Bosch SHX98M09UC or even the Danby Portable Dishwasher, but it does not cause a racket that is too unbearable during the day. Just don’t run it at bedtime, I’d say.

The Whirlpool DU850SWPQ Dishwasher is a really good option for those who want to cut down the chores and save water/energy costs yet cannot afford the more expensive models with fancy add-ons. For about $280 you get a basic full size dishwasher, still a lot better than handwashing the plates, eh? Get it from here now: Whirlpool DU850SWPQ Dishwasher

More Dishwasher Features
by JUNE on APRIL 10, 2010

If this is the first time you’re buying a dishwasher, you might want to know what is what. I’ve explained the features below.

Tub size
The tub is the internal container of the dishwasher. Choose a taller tub so that you can wash more dishes in one load or wash long/large items.

Racks
Find out whether the racks are adjustable to fit items of different sizes. Some racks are removable so you can fit in really large items like platters or pans.

Wash Programs
How many wash programs do you need? That basically depends on the different types of things you will be washing. Basic programs are light wash for less dirty dishes, heavy wash for dirtier ones, and pots and pans wash.

Some dishwashers come with more varieties but they definitely add those in the price so decide whether you need them.

The sanitizing wash program is a useful one I recommend if you’re getting a mid-end dishwasher. It uses a higher temperature and sanitizes your dishes, but make sure you have a stainless steel tub for this to be efficient.

Food disposer/filter
Dishwashers either use a hard food disposer or a filter. A food disposer cleans the residual food from your dishes and grinds them down before washing them away. Mid-end dishwashers might or might not have this feature.

If it doesn’t have a hard food disposer, then the food is caught in the filter and you’ll have to wash the filter regularly.

Number and placement of water jets and spray arms
The more the better! More spray arms and water jets means the dishes get cleaned thoroughly, but of course this adds to the price.

Child lock
For your child’s safety, you might want to check whether the dishwasher has a child-proof door and control panel.

Delay start
A very useful feature for the busy people. If you want to start the dishwasher later but might forget about it, this feature will help. The dishwasher will start automatically at the time you chose.

Single rack wash
Don’t always have a full load? The single rack wash feature lets you run the dishwasher to wash only one rack of dishes, saving you water costs.

Rinse and hold program
You don’t have a full load but the plates are going to sit in the dishwasher until the next meal finishes, so what do you do? Use this feature to rinse the dishes free of residual food so that they won’t smell or cake up, then you can wash them with the other dishes later when you have a full load.

Pause wash program
Oh no! There’s one plate left out on the table when the cycle is already running. Pause the wash program and add it in. If the dishwasher didn’t have this feature, you’ll have to hand wash that plate.

Time remaining indicator
Once you’ve had this, you will want it every time. This shows the time remaining for the running cycle, and most of them also tell you what cycle is running, in case you forgot.

Soil sensors
The high end dishwashers have soil sensors that sense how dirty or murky the water is while it’s running. It will decide then whether to rinse your dishes one more time. This clever device will save you water cost and give you clean dishes every time.

Well, some of these features are common and can be found with the basic dishwasher, while some are only available with the higher end ones. Knowing these features is not enough to let you choose the best dishwasher; read my guide posts on Types of Dishwasher and How to Choose the Best Dishwasher now.

How to Choose the Best Dishwasher
by JUNE on APRIL 9, 2010

Buying a dishwasher isn’t easy, not especially if you haven’t bought one before – there are a lot to understand about dishwashers – and not even if you’ve used one for ten years and need to get a replacement, because the technology has advanced so much since!

But worry not, I have devised a step-by-step method for you to choose the best dishwasher.

  1. Size and Capacity

The very first thing you think about when buying a dishwasher, is SIZE. I mean, think about it, you have to put that thing in your kitchen. You need to connect it with plumbing and power supply. Can you fit a full size dishwasher in your kitchen? Do you need it to be portable? Kept away when not using? Built-in with your kitchen cabinets?

Closely connected with size is capacity. The best way to save water and energy costs is to run a dishwasher with full load, so how many dishes do you wash daily? Averagely, I mean. If your family consists of two persons, or you only cook for dinner every day, why get a dishwasher that can wash twice as many dishes you use?

There are many types of dishwasher sizes and designs. If you haven’t done already, go to my Types of Dishwasher guide post and find out which type of dishwasher you want in your kitchen first. When you’ve eliminated all the types of dishwasher but one, come back here and read on. 🙂

  1. Interior (Tub) Material

It’s either plastic or stainless steel nowadays. Both are good, really, but stainless steel is better. Plastic comes cheaper but they are lighter and vibrations will make more noise than stainless steel tubs. Stainless steel is also more energy-saving for drying cycles because they retain heat better.

  1. Noise

Dishwashers can cause some noise. Is this a concern for you and your family? Do you run your dishwasher at night when you go to sleep? Built-in dishwashers are quieter compared to portable and countertop ones.

Well, that’s it basically. These three are the backbone, the things you MUST consider when you buy a dishwasher. The rest are all features that you decide according to price. It’s good to know about each feature before you start choosing the models though, so check out my guide post on More Dishwasher Features.

Types of Dishwasher
by JUNE on APRIL 8, 2010

There are several types of dishwasher out there, mainly different by size and outer design. Let’s go over each one briefly.

Portable Dishwasher

Dishwasher on wheels! If you live in a rented place and cannot remodel your kitchen, or you want to bring your dishwasher away next time you move, portable dishwasher is one of your best choices. It is not fixed into your kitchen cabinets like the built-in or integrated dishwashers, so you can roll it out of sight when you need the space. Or you can use it as an extra cabinet for your dishes, and the top of it as an extra countertop space. Some of these are convertible into built-in dishwasher so that you can fix them into your kitchen cabinets next time you remodel your kitchen. If you ask me, Danby Portable Dishwasher is the one I like.

Countertop Dishwasher

The name says it. This dishwasher is small and sits on your countertop like a microwave oven. It’s smaller than the portable dishwasher and is perfect for couples without kids, or people who rarely cook at all. This costs less than full-size dishwashers and save you water and energy costs ONLY if you fit into the description above. That’s because if you have plenty of dishes to wash, you can get a full-size dishwasher for just a bit more in the price. EdgeStar Countertop Dishwasher is the best countertop dishwasher I recommend.

Slimline Dishwasher

This slimline dishwasher comes in both portable and built-in versions. It is only 18 inches wide, good for those who don’t have much space left in their kitchen.

Built-in Dishwasher

The standard 24-inch wide full size dishwasher. The built-in dishwasher is fixed into your kitchen under the countertop and all the connections to power and plumbing is invisible to the eye. Built-in dishwashers are always quieter than non-built-in ones. The best quiet dishwasher I found is the Bosch SHX98M09UC Integra 800 Series. Some of these dishwashers are designed to blend in with the kitchen theme. That means the controls are kept out of sight and you won’t realize the dishwasher is there if you didn’t know it already. Whirlpool GU2475XTVY has the best value among these integrated dishwashers.

Drawer Dishwasher

The drawer dishwasher is different from any other dishwasher in its design. For this one, you load from the top, like putting dishes into a drawer. The good thing is, you get two drawers for one dishwasher, and you can set them going separately. What’s the benefit of this? Why, you can save water and energy costs when you have only half load, and yet be able to wash all dishes at the same time when you have a full load! What’s more, you can run the two loads with different wash cycles, separating them one for china and one for pots, for instance. I recommend: KitchenAid Architect Series II KUDH03DTSS Fully Integrated Double Drawer Dishwasher.

Still not sure how to buy a dishwasher? Check out my guide post on How to Choose the Best Dishwasher, where I’ve explained more about this, or read up on More Dishwasher Features to decide which features you want for your dishwasher.

Best Dishwasher – Introduction
by JUNE on APRIL 7, 2010

If you’ve used a dishwasher before, you’ll know that the one at home is probably the best investment you’ve ever made (provided you bought the right one, of course). The time, energy, and water you can save!

I’m June and this is my Best Dishwasher Blog. I’ve used all kinds of dishwashers. Back when dishwashers became common in households, my mum, a great follower of new technology, was among the first to install one at home. Then when I moved out to my own apartment, I got my own dishwasher.

Best Dishwasher – Dishwasher Reviews

I wasn’t all that good at choosing dishwashers then but I knew roughly what I wanted from one. At that time dishwashers weren’t as sophisticated as they are now. But each time when I shopped for a new dishwasher (I moved quite a few times) I realized that the technology has advanced again and I have a lot of catch up to do. And so I decided to start this blog. Well, there are plenty of dishwasher buying guides online but let’s see whether I can put all the useful information together for shoppers like me.

If you are among those who still hand wash their tableware, let me tell you how a dishwasher can help you cut down your chores and expenses. A dishwasher is sort of like a washing machine, only you wash plates, bowls, cutlery, drinking vessels, pots and pans in it instead of clothes.

There’s a rack in the dishwasher; just place all the dirty dishes and silverware in the slots meant for them, fill the detergent cups, add rinse agent to the rinse aid dispenser, then close the door and select the wash and drying cycles. Isn’t that a whole lot easier than hand washing each dish?

Dishwashers spray jets of hot water on the dishes to clean them. They use less water than you would with hand-washing but the dishes will come out squeaky clean and sanitized; even the stubborn stains will go without you having to scrub them!

Dishwashers come in many sizes and capacity. There are also many features available for mid-end to high-end models. I will write some posts about how to choose the best dishwasher, so come back soon to check them out. 🙂
